What is ​​​​​​​Astigmatism?

Astigmatism is a common refractive error of the eye that affects how light rays are focused on the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. In individuals with astigmatism, the cornea (the clear front surface of the eye) or the lens inside the eye has an irregular shape, more like a football rather than a round basketball. This irregular shape causes light rays to focus on multiple points instead of a single point on the retina, leading to blurred or distorted vision at various distances. Astigmatism can occur alongside nearsightedness (myopia) or farsightedness (hyperopia). It is typically diagnosed during an eye examination and can be corrected using eyeglasses, contact lenses, or in some cases, refractive surgery.
